A life practice for promoting ease

  • Alexander Technique (AT) is a holistic lifetime learning practice that helps people function better, with greater ease, less effort, and better balance and mobility. It is particularly useful in improving the quality and comfort of everything we do while we are upright, as we are during most waking activities.

  • AT teaches us to reduce excessive and unnecessary tension. Since tension often triggers or exacerbates pain, AT can be very helpful for managing or even eliminating chronic pain conditions.

  • AT makes us aware of subconscious habits and patterns interfering with our postural support, movement and breathing. AT lessons help us develop the skills necessary to prevent and transform these habits.

  • By employing our AT skills and overcoming our habits, we can enjoy better use of our selves (our  whole system of mind and body processes). With improved use of our selves, we can better perform all our daily activities, at home, at work or at play.

  •  AT is used by
    • actors and singers
    • people who play sports or instruments
    • those recovering from injury
    • those managing chronic pain, especially back pain
    • headache sufferers, including people with tension-induced migraines
    • those experiencing discomfort resulting from  work activities
    • people suffering from stage fright or anxiety
    • people with breathing conditions
    • people with Parkinson's Disease
    • expectant mothers preparing for childbirth
    • seniors seeking better balance, agility and confidence
    • individuals seeking to improve or explore themselves

ABOUT HOW  WORK HAS HELPED THEM

  • People who study Alexander Technique (best taught in one-on-one, hands-on lessons with a trained, certified AT teacher) typically experience relief from chronic pain and discomfort, improved breathing and voice production, and greater ease of movement.

  • Regular practice of Alexander Technique can bring about improvement in general functioning overall: better balance, respiration, circulation, digestion, mood and mental clarity.

  • Continuous, ongoing practice of Alexander Technique increases the individual's capacity to resist habitual, debilitating reactions to internal and external stimuli, and increase his or her capacity for meeting physical, mental and emotional challenges with greater creativity and resilience.

  • AT teaching has been passed down directly from its early 20th-century creator, F.M. Alexander. Over time different teaching approaches have emerged, adapted by influential teachers who originally trained under F.M.

  • At betterATbeing, AT is taught in the tradition of Walter Carrington, to whom F.M. entrusted his practice on his death. Carrington's classic approach to teaching AT is closest to F.M.'s own, providing  the pupil with the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to take on any activity with grace, poise and freedom.
